I had the honour of photographing the newest chapter in the Ohler families story. Sweet baby Emery. Riley and I grew up together, going to school together in a small town in southern Alberta. He comes from an amazing family who farms east of Stavely, Alberta. They have seen their fair share of trials and have shown such grace and strength in everything they have had to endure. Riley, his wife Ainsley and their son Rhett lost their 15 month old son, and brother, Colin last June. Something no one should have to navigate through.
When Riley asked me if I would document the “Play Date for Colin” to celebrate his short but big life I was honoured and filled with emotion. They knew the day would be really hard. A blur. With so many people offering kind words and condolences they would surely miss the details that they one day might want to reflect on. If I could use my gift of photography to someday have images for Colin’s family to look back on, to help heal, to remember all those who came to remember him and celebrate him - I would. Happily. Not easily but I was honoured to give them the gift of memories on what was most likely the hardest day of their lives.
Fast forward to Spring of 2019. In what must have been a slow and hard few months for this family focusing on healing and repairing their broken hearts. Riley, Ainsley and Rhett welcomed a baby girl named Emery into their family. I was beyond honoured when they asked me to capture her and their family. Sweet tributes to Colin were sprinkled into their images thoughtfully. The blue heart symbolizes Colin and how loved he is. The blue nail polish, blue clothing choices. The tattoo on Riley’s arm - the last words he said to his little boy. It’s experiences like these, where I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to create magical images for a family, however emotional and hard it may be sometimes. It’s the best job in the world!
You are already so loved sweet Emery. <3
